In the vertical style the top arm is held higher resulting in the paddle in a more vertical position. The kinetic design is suited to this style of paddling.

In the horizontal style the arms are in a lower position. The paddle is in a more horizontal position when paddling. The eclipse design is more suited to this style of paddling.
